How it Works

How compressor optimisation works

Smartcool's ECO3™ and ESM™ sit between the existing controller and the compressor. They intercept the control signal and determine the optimal point to end each cycle, keeping the compressor operating in its most efficient phase. The next cycle is then managed intelligently based on system behaviour. The result: less total run time, lower energy consumption, and no impact on temperature or comfort.

Refrigerant is most efficient at the beginning of a compressor cycle. At start-up, a cooling system produces a large temperature drop using relatively little energy. As the temperature approaches its set point, the compressor works harder for diminishing returns, consuming significantly more energy per degree of cooling.

A standard thermostat does not account for this. It runs the compressor until the set point is reached, regardless of how inefficient that final portion of the cycle has become.

Installation takes hours, not days. No mechanical modification. No refrigerant handling. No disruption to building operations. Both products fail to safe, automatically removing themselves from the circuit if needed.

ESM™

ESM™ handles complex, multi-compressor environments: refrigeration racks and packs, chillers, process cooling systems, and multi-compressor air conditioning configurations. It works with any load profile and alongside any existing energy management system. ESM™ saves an average of 15% on compressor energy consumption (kWh) and 10% on peak demand (kW), site dependent.

ECO3™ is designed for single and dual-stage compressor systems: commercial air conditioning units, rooftop packaged systems, heat pumps, and standard refrigeration. It is compatible with any HVAC or refrigeration system with one or two stages of control, across all major manufacturers. Independent Validation

Independently validated by Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), operated by the US Department of Energy, conducted two independent evaluations of Smartcool's compressor optimisation technology: a field assessment at an ASDA/Wal-Mart superstore in Sheffield, UK (2004) and a controlled laboratory test at the Lennox R&D facility in Texas (2005).

The findings were consistent across both: compressor energy consumption reduced by 5 to 10% (ORNL's conservative assessment), compressor cycling rates reduced by 30 to 40%, and no negative impact on temperature control or equipment operation. ORNL noted that real-world results in large commercial buildings would likely exceed the laboratory figures.
