UK Grocery Retailer: 25,554 kWh Annual Savings
A large UK grocery retailer committed to reaching Net Zero by 2040 needed to demonstrate tangible progress. Smartcool was installed across three locations as a proof of concept, delivering 25,554 kWh in annual energy savings and an average payback period under three years.

The Challenge
As part of a ten-point sustainability plan, the retailer was committed to reducing the carbon footprint of its day-to-day operations. With heat pumps in use across multiple sites, HVAC represented a meaningful and addressable share of their total energy consumption. They needed a retrofit solution that could demonstrate a clear return on investment before any wider commitment to rollout.
Our Approach
Following a site survey confirming the extent of heat pump use across their estate, we installed Smartcool's ECO3™ technology across three locations. For each site, the technology was alternated between active and bypassed modes over consecutive months. Device-level energy data was collected wirelessly throughout via Panoramic Power, giving both the client and Smartcool a transparent, independently verifiable view of the results.
The Results
Across all three locations, the technology produced a measurable reduction in carbon emissions and energy consumption (site dependent). The average payback period across the three sites was 32.8 months, with a return on investment of 39% and combined annual savings of 25,554 kWh. Encouraged by these results, the client has continued rolling out Smartcool across further locations in their network.
