CEMEX: Energy Monitoring Across 42 UK Quarry Sites
Global building materials giant CEMEX needed better visibility into equipment performance and energy use across its UK quarry network. Panoramic Power's wireless monitoring technology identified operational inefficiencies, prevented costly equipment failures, and supported significant annual savings across 42 sites.
The Challenge
CEMEX is one of the world's largest producers of building materials, with operations across more than 50 countries. Its UK estate includes industrial-scale plants, quarries, distribution centres, and marine terminals, all running heavy equipment that consumes significant quantities of electricity. Managing energy use and equipment performance across such a large and varied operation was a persistent challenge. Any efficiencies identified and realised at scale would deliver substantial financial and operational benefits across the business.
Our Approach
Panoramic Power was initially deployed across three CEMEX locations in the UK. Self-powered wireless sensors were installed to monitor a range of essential machinery, including pumps, conveyors, and crushers. Live energy data was transmitted to the PowerRadar cloud-based analytics platform, providing real-time insight into energy consumption and equipment performance at a granular level. The platform identified inefficiencies, flagged potential faults, and gave site managers a clear view of overall asset health. The data also enabled more efficient maintenance scheduling, reducing the risk of unexpected downtime.
The Results
Analysis of the PowerRadar data revealed that an aggregate conveyor motor at one of CEMEX's quarries was overloading and tripping out, creating a production bottleneck. Fixing it immediately increased throughput. Combined with further energy-saving measures identified through ongoing monitoring, the solution delivered significant annual savings. On the strength of these results, CEMEX expanded the deployment rapidly. More than 1,600 sensors now monitor equipment across 42 UK quarry sites, giving the business continuous, estate-wide visibility into energy consumption and equipment performance.
