Bradford Royal Infirmary: 23% Heat Pump Energy Savings

Bradford Royal Infirmary partnered with Smartcool to evaluate ECO3™ on a single Mitsubishi heat pump. The trial confirmed a 23% reduction in energy consumption, with a payback period of under three years.

The Challenge

Bradford Royal Infirmary is committed to reducing energy consumption across its estate and supporting NHS sustainability targets. To assess the potential impact of Smartcool's technology in a controlled setting, a proof-of-concept project was conducted on a Mitsubishi PUHZ 140 VHA(2) heat pump.

Our Approach

A new ECO3 unit was installed in February 2023, fitted with IoT capabilities for real-time status reporting and remote switching between savings and bypass modes via a secure web portal. Device-level energy metering was used to isolate and monitor the heat pump's consumption throughout the trial, with all data transmitted wirelessly to the cloud for continuous tracking and independent client review. Results were gathered with ECO3™ running in savings mode and again with it bypassed, then compared to establish the true impact of the technology.

The Results

The trial confirmed energy savings of 23% (site dependent), with projected annual savings of 876 kWh. Following the testing phase, ECO3™ was left in savings mode, ensuring those reductions continue on an ongoing basis. Extrapolating these results across the wider Bradford Royal Infirmary estate illustrates the significant scale of savings available through a broader rollout. Payback period is typically under three years.
