The Challenge
Rising utility costs were putting pressure on the hotel chain's operating margins. Like many hospitality businesses, HVAC represented a significant share of their energy expenditure. The goal was clear: reduce that cost without compromising the comfort that guests expect, and without the disruption or capital expense of replacing equipment that was otherwise working well.
Our Approach
Smartcool's ECO3™ technology works by optimising the compressor cycle of existing heat pump systems. Rather than replacing equipment, it retrofits directly to existing controls, cutting compressor run time during the inefficient tail end of each cycle, where the most energy is consumed for the least temperature benefit.
To demonstrate the technology's effectiveness before committing to a wider rollout, we installed ECO3™ at a single location and used Panoramic Power to monitor energy consumption at device level. We compared one month with the technology active against one month with it bypassed. The results were independently measured and transparently reported.
The Results
The trial produced a 22% reduction in energy consumption (site dependent) with no effect on occupant comfort. On that basis, the hotel chain proceeded with installations across five further locations.
Across all six sites, the projected annual savings total £86,181, with an average payback period of 32.4 months and a return on investment of 37%. All results are based on independently monitored, device-level energy data collected by Panoramic Power.
