Over the last twenty years, Smartcool’s technology has developed into a highly reliable, proven leader in the energy efficiency arena. Throughout its history, the technology has continued to evolve, to improve and to expand its range of applications.
The ESM™ was the original embodiment of Smartcool’s technology, originally developed in Australia in the 1980s, and has achieved a huge amount of success globally. In 2008, Smartcool introduced the ECO3™, providing a simplified application of the software proven by the ESM™. To see how Smartcool’s technology is used in real world installations, visit our Product Applications page.
Not only are there over 26,000 Smartcool installations worldwide, but the technology has also undergone significant testing, resulting in a great deal of evidence of its energy saving capabilities.
Independent Third Party Testing Results:
-
US Chillers, together with Palm District Cooling Company, performed testing of the ESM™ in Dubai, UAE over a forty-two day period in 2009. The testing was conducted on a Carrier 19XR centrifugal chiller and demonstrated extremely positive results. The average daily usage savings on the compressor across the test was 2,925.26 kWh or 14.89%, which equates to 2 tons of CO2 saved per day. Not only did the ESM™ provide substantial savings, but it also maintained and slightly improved the KW per ton efficiency of the chiller. The savings were achieved while maintaining the chilled water temperature within the required set point band of the chiller. Read the full Testing Report.

The University of Miami, on behalf of a major utility, conducted extensive testing of the ESM™ over a fourteen month period in 2006 / 2007. The testing showed that the ESM™ reduced kWh usage of the entire air conditioning system by 8.9% – which provides a savings of 13.38% of the kWh usage by the compressors, an annual reduction of 43,660 kWh and a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of 58,911 lbs. The testing also showed a 10.8% reduction of peak demand which is equated to 6.9 KW in August and estimated to be 422 KW for the year. These savings were achieved with no statistically significant impact on the indoor air temperature and indoor relative humidity. Read the Executive Summary.

Oak Ridge National Laboratory, a division of the U.S. Department of Energy, conducted a two phase test on the ESM™ in 2004-2005. The first phase of the test involved the analysis of data collected from an installation on a refrigeration rack in a grocery store. Phase 1 results were sufficiently promising to merit and a second phase of testing in a controlled laboratory environment. The second phase evaluated the ability of the ESM™ to reduce the electrical consumption of a four compressor roof top unit in a controlled laboratory environment. Test results showed an 11.87% reduction in kWh usage by the compressors in the system and a 2.2% demand (KW) reduction. Read the full Reports by clicking on the corresponding report titles.

In 1998, a test on a refrigeration system was conducted by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP). The ESM™ was installed on two compressors of the refrigeration system of Notrica's Market in Bellflower, California. The average daily kWh usage savings recorded during this test was between 20 and 24%. These reductions were achieved while maintaining the temperature performance of the system.
