Development of the Energy Saving Module™ by Abbotly Pty Ltd. of Australia began in 1983 with the first commercial models being introduced in 1986. Since that time the Energy Saving Module™ have advanced through four generations of development with the present generational model; the "ESM System"™ having been introduced in 1999.

Smartcool International Inc. purchased the assets of Abbotly Technologies Pty Ltd of Australia in 2006. This acquisition enhanced and complimented Smartcool's previous business as the master distributor of the ESM™, for the United States, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean. The marketing of the ESM™ in North America is now the responsibility of the company's wholly owned subsidiary, Smartcool Systems USA Inc., outside of North America the ESM™ is distributed by Smartcool International, Inc.
